The world’s most expensive and least accessible smartphone is coming soon to an end, and that means there’s no reason to get too excited about the next one.
Mmb has been quietly teasing its SmartPhone 8X for a few months now, teasing a price tag of $1,499 (around £1,500), but a source familiar with the project told Bloomberg News on Monday that the phone is in fact not a smartphone at all.
The company, which has been a subsidiary of Lenovo since 2013, is targeting a March 2019 launch.
The new phone, which will sport a metal frame, will use the same form factor as its predecessors, including a 13-inch (or 13.5-inch) 1080p display, an 8MP camera and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor.
That Qualcomm processor is the first Qualcomm chipset we’ve seen from Mmb, and it comes from the company’s SoC family, including the Snapdragon 845 and Snapdragon 852.
The Snapdragon 865 chipset is Mmb’s flagship SoC, and the company is using it in both the SmartPhone 7X and the Smartphone 8X.
The device will be available in the US, UK and Germany at the end of this year, with other markets and carriers to follow.
In the meantime, Mmb is keeping the price under wraps and hasn’t announced pricing or launch dates.
While the new phone won’t be a smartphone, it will be the most expensive phone Mmb ever made.
A lot of the cost will be in the form of the new chip, though, which Mmb will likely be using as a base for future phones.
The phone will feature a 5.5mm headphone jack, a 2MP front camera and an 8 megapixel rear camera, according to a source.
The display will also be curved, with a resolution of 1080p.
It will be able to support up to 64GB of storage and will feature Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and a microSD card slot.
The handset will come with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, which is expected to include some improvements to the user interface.
In terms of pricing, the new smartphone will cost around $1.29, or around £1.30.
MMB isn’t the first smartphone company to try and take advantage of the smartphone market with a smart-phone, but its price tag will likely put off many smartphone buyers.
This new phone will likely end up being a hit in the long run, though.
